Year 2 Season 5 Info
I’ve often thought about and asked the question “why do people make music?”
My answer is usually along the lines of - people have need to express things that only an instrument or music can allow. Heartbreak greater than words, needs the blues. Happiness greater than words, needs that one happy song. Based on the excess emotion, that *stuff* finds a way to be vented via an instrument.
But this got me thinking . . .
Beyond those that can play an instrument . . .
Why do we play music?
As in, why do we turn music on when we do?
Long car rides, deep study sessions, operating rooms (yes, the aux cord is a thing for surgeons who spend multiple hours in deep work).
That’s sort of where my curiosity is aiming me this season. There’s something really interesting about the power of a playlist or a mixtape. If a piece of art is worth a thousand words, what about a whole collection of art? What does that possibly say?
Based on that . . .
This Season, the theme is PLAYLISTS
Each week I’ll feature a playlist.
It can be one I’ve found, it can be one that’s submitted, or one that I’ve made. I’ll try to keep the words less explain-y and more descriptive, with maybe a small piece of trivia if necessary. The point of this season is to be more hands off. Emails and reading are very active activities. This season I want you all to open the email, click the playlist, and then go about your day. A more long term approach to music appreciation.
The Playlist of the Week
Some Thoughts
I featured a song from this playlist before.
One day, I was listening to a hip-hop bossa nova mixtape and I was curious if anyone did a drum and bass x bossa nova song. Hip-hop and Drum and Bass music are kind of like sister-genres in the sense that they’re both made up of the same things. The only difference is where hip-hop hangs around 70-90bpm, dnb is twice that. The bpm range is very loose, so do with that what you will. Generally, if you were to take the beat from any hip-hop song and speed it up 2x, it would sound like DnB.
Sure enough, my curiosity lead to the discovery of AN ENTIRE PLAYLIST for this type of music. Which, totally blew my mind. Not only did this genre exist, it was thorough. I *heavily* appreciated this playlist because it allowed me to explore totally unfamiliar territory with a lot of material to dig into.
Next WEEK
I will be making a themed playlist, but if you have another playlist or a theme that you’d want to hear me make a playlist for . . .

BONUS
I think I may have featured this song before, but it is my favorite Brazilian song that isn’t on Spotify. This song was sampled for a soundtrack of Fast Five.
