Happy Friday Friends!!
Welcome back to Music Appreciation.
Today I have two songs and for the bonus I have an audio recording of my friend (Sammie) and me playing “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith.
The song of the day is one I discovered earlier today, it is a mashup of a cover and the original of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap.
The original is one of my all time favorite songs. The lyrics really get me and I have a sentimental relationship with that song as it reminds me of one of my favorite people (we are no longer in touch, but the memories are very fond).
For songs like that, it’s ALWAYS hard to find a good cover that can connect emotionally because it is always in comparison to the original.
That said, I heard this guitar cover a few months ago and I thought it was good, but didn’t really think anything of it.
Earlier today, while randomly scrolling on YouTube, I found a video where someone combined both the original and the cover and it was just incredible. It’s definitely one of those things where the parts combined to form something new and greater than the sum of those separate parts.
Is it as good or as special as the original?
I don’t think so, because the original has a simplicity to it. It’s a vocorder acapella that’s meant to be a standalone thing. However, within that, in the recording of the original, there are no other instruments and although it has a full sound, it’s still missing some elements.
And that’s where the beauty of this mashup lies. It creates a well orchestrated dialogue between the two pieces and it’s just perfect.
That’s all I got today so have a listen and enjoy :)
(and be sure to check out the bonus, because I’m really stoked by how our cover came out)
Song #1 - The Mashup
Song #2 - The Original
Bonus - Our Cover of “Lay Me Down”
The recording has some convo in the beginning and the end, as well as at the end of the recording there’s a *slip* of a little swearing - so, sorry about that. If you don’t want to hear the swearing, just cut it off after the laughter.
All in all, I feel thematically, I was really attracted to the song of the day (the mashup) because we’ve been trying to find “our sound” in just a guitar and a vocal performance. I don’t think we’re as good as the mashup (yet), but I do feel we’re getting closer.
